MBD - who uses it?

Unread post by matt »

Can any Solidworks user of MBD tell me about using it? I'm mainly just curious to know how many people actually use it.

Using DimXpert once in a while...
We dont use MBD here... DimXpert got used just because one of our tolerance analysis software (EzTOL) could import and link MBD dimension

Personally i find it work OK (usable, but not great, and with various pet peeves) most of the time for machined and sheet metal parts

When it come to injection molded parts, it is a nightmare and i just gave up most of the time ;;
Far too many items in the world are designed, constructed and foisted upon us with no understanding-or even care-for how we will use them.

Does SW currently allow the import of STEP AP242? As of 2017, they did not.

Matt,
Great question. There are a lot of acronyms in our industry. Can you please spell out what you are asking about? MBD can be model-based definition or model-based design. Which one?

ANd I forgot to add..don't say PMI either..as that also means different things to different people. ie. PMI in Solid Edge can include sync tech dimensions that control shape.

Funny that you mention that. In all the time I used SW, no body every used the term PMI. The reason it's connected to Solid Edge is because Solid Edge can use PMI dimensions that come from STEP 242 and change what SW calls a dumb model.

By MBD, I mean definition - dimensions.

See PMI in Solid Edge is not even the industry term Product & Manufacturing Information. PMI in SolidWorks is closer to the industry definition than SE definition. My opinion anyway.

But thanks for the clarity.
