Good news, we are re-launching the SWPUCs.
The latest is about placing equidistant points on a hemisphere. I believe I saw other solutions in the past, maybe even on Matt's blog.

Some really crazy out-of-this-world solutions have already been submitted, with more than a week to go until the finish line. Eddy Alleman even created an add-in that anyone can download to add points and even normal to those points on a spherical surface. Give it a try!
