Shaded with edges & Wire frame selection

Shaded with edges only select top face but Wire frame select all five faces. What is the reason?

left to right selection (blue rectangle) selects everything that is fully encased in the selection area.

With wireframe you can 'see through' the faces, thus you select all the faces. In shaded mode it only sees the top faces, because all other edges are hidden behind each other.

Maybe it would be more clear to you if you had a face on the other side of the part that you can select 'through' everything too!?

Hidden lines Visible and Wireframe Display allow to select edges like a x-ray mode, so you can select edges even if they are overlapping
