I'm on a couple of aquarium forums. That reminded me of a member who swore he had a filter years ago that you started with some kind of siphon action and then it ran by itself, with no electrical power, air pump, etc. As you can imagine, some of us were skeptical. He said he was going to make up a prototype and report back when it was done. One of the gullible young members was even helping him with drawings.

Oddly enough, we haven't heard from him for a while.

It just dawned on me that we're discussing how perpetual motion machines will never work no matter how hard the people believe or try in a thread asking if anyone is actually using 3DXprnc. Not that all PaaS are equal to perpetual motion machines, it's just that this specific PaaS seems to have about the same track record as perpetual motion machine; keep working on it and believe real hard...

When I was about 8 yrs old my brother and I attempted to create perpetual siphoning. We sure thought we could do this! We'd get the water going downhill, but we discovered water simply does not go back uphill no matter how fast it's going downhill!

From the desperate, frustrated tone of the OP I had to check if that was a co-worker here trying to come to grips with life after changing CAD systems.

The interesting thing about going from using one quirky, dysfunctional tool to using a different quirky and dysfunctional tool is I was comfortable with the old one. Like an old beater car, it makes noises and warning lights go on and off; but if I've drove the car for years I know what is expected behavior an what is not. Put me in a different old beater car with different noises and warning lights I'll be concerned about everything. If we could assume the software only presents relevant warnings and always performs the way it should, then we would have an anchor point. But since that's not a reality it takes years of practice to get be able to identify the bugs from the ID10T errors.

One thing that i had learnt (the hard way) when learning a new CAD system (in my case...CREO) is that..... forget whatever you know about your old cad system....

Things get so much better when u start from scratch

There is no such thing as fluent in one CAD = fluent in all CAD system...
You will need a minimum amount of time and training to get familiar with the UI and workflow when u switch CAD

(Ironically... a lot of time user are expected to "learn on the job"....)
Far too many items in the world are designed, constructed and foisted upon us with no understanding-or even care-for how we will use them.

That same concept applies to company CAD policies when the company changes CAD system, similar to when a user changes CAD system but with more digits after the currency sign.

If I had known what I was getting into, I would have made the argument that the cost of NX would be offset by my lack of learning new software. Of course at the time I was thinking, "I know CAD, how hard can learning new software be?" I probably still would have lost the argument, we had no money, but in hindsight, it would have been the better decision.

I've got to share, if only because "Experience" is in the pleasant part early in this bit, but also because it re-arises to my attn by the recent documentary about George Carlin and the promotions around it (irony intentional). I loved this when it was fresh. Let's play marketing bingo!

The link works but only if you are already logged in.
If you read @josh's post it makes perfect sense, you should always be connected and logged into the platform, because being interconnected over there is most important, more important than work product, production, etc...The real question is, why were you logged out of the platform in the first place?...

I meant the link inside one of the replies, it just takes me to the main SolidWorks part of the community site. I thought maybe it would be post with more info on the tags.

Maybe I'll create a new tag over there #NotMySolidWorks

I am honestly a big fan of tags. They are hopefully the future so that you don't need a 'file/folder-tree-system' anymore. I am just looking at my music library and my photo library on my phone right now and it's 100000000000000x better than with a file/folder system.
That does not mean that there should not be general categories to give you an overview and I agree that suggestions for tags should always appear.

That is so beautifully put by Josh, and when you read it, it can be hard for some to grasp the sarcasm because the early part of the post somewhat makes sense. It's just a shame that they forgot to prioritize knowledge and information as they worked on prioritizing connection and experience.

Imagine a place where you connect, interact, create bonds, while also sharing knowledge and collecting information.

Oh wait, that already exists, it's called a forum.

That is exactly the issue the platform faces. Tags should be complimentary to categories. Should have been thought of as an additional tool to refine search, not as something to define categories.

There may be some form of logic they followed while creating the platform the way they did, but it certainly isn't one that smacks you in the face at first sight, and nobody over there is able to actually explain it.

It is, when appropriate. I've seen a few of your posts where the sarcasm was gloriously un-tempered, but only in situations where that was richly deserved.

It took me to the login page, but then it took me to the correct page.

The amount of files in a folder could theoretically be limitless. However, every time when the OS will access the specific folder to search for files, it will have to process all files in the folder. With less than 500 files, you might not notice any delays. But when you have tens of thousands of files in a single folder, a simple folder list command could take way too long. When these folders can be accessed through FTP, it will really be too slow...

NTFS can hold 4billion files per folder, it degrades relatively quickly. Around a thousand you will start to notice performance issues, several thousand and you'll see explorer appear to hang for a while. It's not only copy, accessing the filelist in general, search file will also take significant amount of time.

Of course the amount of time required to read, map, and process folder indexes may vary depending on hardware capabilities, file system fragmentation, memory, CPU, and cache performance. There is no prescribed limit to how many files you can place in an NTFS folder, but Microsoft recommends that you test your particular scenario to ensure that the time required to enumerate the contents of large folders does not affect application performance or uptime requirements. If necessary, add additional layers to the folder structure so there are a smaller number of files per folder.

You may want to reconsider the way you keep your files.

You are right that this is not possible with i.e. how the Windows file explorer works (thank you for pointing that out!) but that is not necessarily true for other systems and that's the beauty of it. I wanted to point out that a tag system is something that (if implemented correctly) is superior to any file/folder system. The file/folder structure could be maintained additionally though!

Tags only work if everyone takes the time to enter them, and if there is some sort of consistent path to follow. They are meaningless if I tag something "drafting" and the user is searching for drawing. "If implemented correctly" is the key here, and almost impossible to pull off in an open environment like the SWamp.

It needs "administration", just like other structures. Now, is there administration done on it, or is it all programmation that does the sorting? I'm guessing the latter, which is why the search sucks so bad over at 3DSWYM.

From watching our CAD users access files as well as part records in ERP for the past 5 years I would say we find our stuff by drilling up and down the Contains/Where Used trees. One of the most common practices goes something like, "I'm looking for a part but don't know the number and to heck with guessing the description. But I know it's used with this other part number that I know." So it's a quick where used of the known part number then BOM search of one of the where used. So to us a side by side Where Used and Contains tree views with fast thumbnail/preview of the selected is more relevant than folder structures or Search tools.

Come to think of it there's another thread here recently about this method of accessing files instead of the Search function.

Similar here. This is the search (tags, attributes) vs browse (folders, trees, etc) argument. Both have their place. Sometimes I don't know exactly what I'm looking for and I'm not certain what tag I should use. Browsing folders and thumbnails works better.

I go to Amazon if I know exactly what I want through searching. I go to the brick and mortar store just to browse for stuff for a project and I'm not sure what may work.

So they're closing the Swym Enhancement Requests community to new ideas. I think the problem was determined to be "people are making too many enhancement requests" and the solution was "stop them making requests" not "fix the underlying structural, software and philosophical issues undermining the success of the platform".

Aren't there several Dilbert comics for this? I don't have any handy to paste.
