Yeah, you have 3 weeks to get this site in shipshape. Why are you posting when you should be working on this site?

Thanks for creating this forum for us "old time" SW users. I have been a SW user since 1998. As I know that change is good, that doesn't mean I have to like it. I will probably visit this forum more than the 3DSWYM site.

Yeah, there's some old timers here, but also some newer users too. Welcome to the site. Check back often, and join in here and there. I'm sure you can find an interesting topic or have a question that has been gnawing at you for years...VicFrauenfeld wrote: ↑Fri Mar 12, 2021 9:36 am Thanks for creating this forum for us "old time" SW users. It's not as hard as it looks, you just have to have the right stuff in place, which I did, and a little bit of time on your hands, which I don't, really, but this is kind of fun. Hi Everyone! Good to see all the familiar names from the SW forum!
To introduce myself, I'm Mike's coworker (it's tough [sarcasm]). Between us we can figure out most problems, but when we're stumped we go to the gurus on the forum.
I'll have more questions than answers, but glad to be here.
Thanks for getting this together, matt!

And, I do look a little bit nicer than my avatar (depends who you ask though). My theory is; if I have an ugly avatar people will expect me to be ugly and then they won't be disappointed when they meet me.....

Hi guys
I decided to keep my options open and sign up for this one as well. I'd love a more modern approach than this, but I'll voice those concerns in another topic.

Still smells like new paint---and I'm late!
Over the last year I've increasingly spent time doing non-design work, fixing/building computers, learning a new gig.
"And now for something completely different..." Thanks, Matt! I stumbled in here after checking the SW forum for the first time in many weeks, so I don't even have any back-story. Will wander around a bit later. For now, it's time to fix up a Linux laptop for a client...

Hello All.
I have been lurking around the SW Forums and following the SWIFT TEAM for some time and like all of you, I will be sad to see it go..
And like all of you, I too am rather flummoxed by the new "swamp" ..
MATT.. This is a great initiative and full respects to you mate for making this happen.
I believe this will be huge. Well done. And, thank you.

Thanks! It will be the people who post here who make it great. I just had the luck to act on the idea when the need seemed to come to a head. You're welcome to lurk, of course, but it would be better if you ask or answer questions. Multiple points of view often help us get to the best answer.

Here's a chart showing the difference between this forum and 3D SWYM. I'm not sure that the 3D SWYM members are correct but it still gives a good illustration of the difference.

The SolidWorks community there show 4794 members that I guess they imported. But who can tell, you can't search the list and scrolling thru it is futile as like everything else there, it's a ginormous display of icons. They think everyone communicates on their phone I guess.

Re: Welcome!
Hey @matt, couple ideas.
Collapsable quotes would be a great addition to the forums. Quoting posts sometimes takes a lot of space and sometimes even forces some snipping.
Usergroups and usertags to make experts and mods/admins stand out?
-Administrators/Moderators
-Supporter (someone who donated? if you do go that avenue)
-Contributor (Someone who answers questions and helps out)
Questions/Answers: I really liked that format on the SW Forums. It saved having to scroll through an entire thread to find an answer, and having "questions" helped distinguishing what a thread is about. Discussion, question, poll, etc... Maybe you've already adressed this?
User profile formatting, maybe more options? Maybe I'm not looking at the right place but I'm not saying any way to view someone's topics. I can view the posts they made, but not a list of the threads they created.
Youtube embedder : Pretty useful to be able to view videos from the forum rather then having to open the link
Double/triple post merger : Merge multiple consecutive posts from the same user. Saves space.

Re: Welcome!
I never saw the usefulness of questions vs. discussions. Most people (like me) did it wrong anyway. But it was nice when the (correct) answer was right below the original post.

Re: Welcome!
The only real usefulness I saw was the one you pointed out, but it's still a rather useful feature when searching, it can save some time.
Perhaps here there will be people to turn discussions into questions and vice versa, and to appoint the correct answer if someone doesn't do it. The issue with the SW Forum was that there was not much involvment on SW's part.

- we have the ability to do groups and ranks, haven't decided how to implement it yet
- we have the Post Icons at the top of the post edit window
I'll look into some of the rest. Might be able to make some of that happen.

Clicking on a link with your scroll wheel instead of left mouse button will open the link in a new tab, but keep you on the current tab (I'm pretty sure that's one of the many things I learned that from Deepak Gupta). That works on all sites (as far as I know).AlexLachance wrote: ↑Tue Mar 23, 2021 9:09 am @matt I'm not sure if this is something you can change on your side, but it would it be possible to have links open in tabs rather then in the current window?
