how to NOT update thumbnail
how to NOT update thumbnail
I am saving some 2d blocks that are simple representation of 3d data.
my colleague used to overlap 3d data to save a thumbnail that show the 3d instead of some lines inside the block.
It is a lot nicer and easier to figure out the block content.
He does not remember how he did it... if I remove the 3d from the block file the thumbnail is updated. I tried to trick the preview from an assy file but it seems it does not work as well....

If it works like a part file then most likely yes..mp3-250 wrote: ↑Sat Jul 08, 2023 5:58 pm Apparently SLDBLK files are PRT file and you can insert also a 3D geometry.
I want to superimpose a 3D part to show the thumbnail of what the simplified sketch is representing.
But it does not work... I look up in KB Solutions and apparently it SHOULD work from a part edited in context of an assembly.
So If I save the file with the 3D thumbnail and then save it after suspending the rebuild it should show the old thumbnail?
Did I get your suggestin right? I will try when I go back to work thanks.
The workflow will be:
1. Save the file with 3D thumbnail
2. Suspend the rebuild
3. Suppress the 3D (?)
4. Save again, select dont rebuild when prompted
Re: how to NOT update thumbnail
Is the 2D Block SOLIDWORKS Part file?
Not sure will this help...
I used to do something similar in the past (suppressing some feature but still wan those feature to show in thumbnail)
1. suspending the rebuild using macro (macro by artem)
2. suppress the feature
3. save, select dont rebuild
4. close the doc without rebuilding
the downside is that the doc will always have a save flag when open because it is rebuild when open

Use Inventor:
Re: how to NOT update thumbnail
Select these 2 options

Re: how to NOT update thumbnail
Actually I do NOT want that thumbnail to show the actual geometry inside the file
Re: how to NOT update thumbnail
well according to KB apparently in SW it is allowed to show unrelated geometry if a part is saved from the edit in context inside the assembly, but ... it does not work with blocks apparently! Or I am doing it wrong.

Re: how to NOT update thumbnail
Actually it was simpler
1. make an assy
2. insert the part you want to thumbnail in the assy
3. create a sketch in the assy (otherwise it does not work)
4. draw the sketch overlapping the part
5. export the sketch savIng it as a block
the thumbnail of the block is the assy view. I was making the block in the wrong place.
UPDATE
almost comically it does not work with my working files but works with new filesfrom scratch... so the suspend rebuild mode is the most suitable for me
