Due to sponsorship arrangements my previous company was forced to adopt Windows 10 in its first year of release. It was a complete disaster. We spent most of the first 6 months of that season trying to get all of our engineering tools to work. Welcome to the new world of software, where your customers do your beta testing for you.

Here's a compressed summary for you. Mysteries are being resolved. Please wait.
dave.laban wrote: Mon Jun 28, 2021 7:16 am Windows 11 has not been released, it has been announced.

Will be released later this year.
This. Also,

You. Do. Not. Need. To. Make. A. Decision. About. This. Now.
Windows 10 will be supported, in current schedule, until 2025.

It will be freely available to upgrade supported devices, like a fancy feature upgrade. More like Windows 10 originally was, with a compatibility checker and downloaded installer package. For SWx, there will surely be supported versions in the future and not now, just like any other OS cycle change.

The big kicker for most cases appears to be the new hardware requirements. The increases to minimum CPU clock speed, RAM, and drive size are unremarkable to most existing machines. THERE ARE TWO SERIOUS LIMITATIONS in hardware for Windows 11 compatibility. Your device must have a Trusted Platform Module chip, above a certain version. Your CPU must also be within a vague newer generation. MS is actively bungling the clarification of internal contradictions, which makes fact more difficult to discern from mixed guidance.

For example, right now you can buy a brand new $5000 Surface Pro directly from Microsoft, and its earlier CPU generation will prevent it from receiving the release of Windows 11. Seriously.

OTOH, new PCs released this year will meet the new requirements. New PC's released next year and the year after that will meet the requirements. You and I will eventually go through a hardware cycle, and the new OS cycle will apply then. Tools were not meant to remain sharp forever, even if you misunderstood manufacturers support schedules and personally maintain unfounded expectations of eternal usefulness.

If anyone cares, Ed Bott has written very well about this, and continues to try to get to the bottom of it.

EDIT to add:
"Windows 11 is primarily a user experience update. Nothing is being introduced along the lines of new APIs or SDKs that would benefit next-generation apps that would compel one to buy a new system." - Jason Perlow
Therefore, I believe that SWx would be unaffected. Paul may be able to tell us soon.
Also, MS has apologized for the confusion. They are also promising to use Insider Testing to test expanding its applicable CPU list.

one interesting thing to see, w11 use-work memory allocation better than w10 ???

if you can try to lead to "out of memory SW yelling", like opening, closing multiple files,
another thread about the "memory problem" with w10+SW

it will be interesting to see if w11+SW work better for that.

Technically OS can allocate as much as addressable. Only put active one in memory. If it never get used, no problem. If used once, OS need to put it in pagefile until program release or close.

Hey Merovingien,.. what I've found interesting, in the past, I rarely saw a SW Resource Monitor Message pop-up,.. but during the w10 updates this past year (and with w11) it is now common for ALL my SW 2014-2021 installs!?

The big holdup with CPU generation, broadly, is that newer chips handle virtualization. This is not so you can run a virtual machine, although yeah that is possible. What this is really about is browser (and app) security. Windows 11 will enable to browse in a virtualized sandbox, where malware has much less opportunity to latch on to your system or access vulnerabilities.

This is why some earlier hardware will be unsupported.

Jason Perlow summarized it in a very funny way:
The problem is that Microsoft buried the lead and employed bait-and-switch tactics to induce us to upgrade, rather than simply being straight with us from the beginning. What Microsoft should have said is: "Look, we can't implement these important architectural changes in the OS to protect you from the bad guys unless your hardware supports this."

Instead, we got: "Open your mouth, the airplane is landing! Microsoft wants you to eat the improved hardware-enforced security feature because it's good for you! Woooo! Flashy Windows 11 user interface!"
In a broader perspective than my own limited use and needs, more security by default is an improvement. Massive understatement.
It has to be less intrusive than UAC though. UAC was the biggest pain in the butt about Vista.

Windows 10 changed memory management. I believe the code or "variable" to check free memory was changed. SW never updated their code so it keep getting wrong free memory size.
Before Windows 10, free RAM is King. We were obsessed with free RAM. We didn't want to use RAM. We wanted to see it empty with nothing in it.
Smartphone changed it. RAM is all used for cache. Remove when active program need more.
Windows 10 followed that and programs that don't update get into trouble.

As you can see, nothing had changed from SW2014 to SW2021. Probably even way before that.

All for the name of security.

it has been built for real for a test, and it was a success, virus can't adapt to every random hardware changes.

it was vry interesting news.

TPM, or Trusted Platform Module, is a hardware chip that is integrated into CPUs and motherboards. ... By doing so, laptop and desktop makers who use TPM chips give devices a better shot at being secure – it is still not failsafe, but TPM chips can encrypt storage drives and protect against a wide range of cyber attacks.
Most business laptop has it. Most desktop don't.
Not all can add one.

I've been getting that message when first starting SW for quite a while. After the first couple of times I just ignore it. Nothing bad has happened . . . yet.

If you happen to be using Windows 11 alongside SWX (SolidWorks, I presume?), I'm curious to know how it's working for you. Sharing your experience could be valuable for others who are contemplating the upgrade.

I.T. and I were trying to resolve some bad performance problems and decided to 'upgrade' to Win11. Its behavior has been problem free. Unfortunately, the interface has a lot of minor, but irritating quirks. Other than the quirks, no new problems are evident with Win11.

prformance wise windows 11 has been a good release, but I agree it causes some annoyance.
PDM is the biggest, and depending on your SW and windows release the login screen and vault explorer could go crazy.

just a remainder sw is FULLY supported under win 11...
