That's hilarious! "you can tow icebergs to Africa" was my favorite little bit...almost spit my coffee on my monitor when I read that...
I think you've really summarized things well from my understanding. Though, I came along later in the timeline.

I fell like this headline is an opportunity for a punchline contest.

Something along the lines of "one is a bottom dwelling scum sucker and the other is just a fish."

You should post about your articles on the forum, I find them rather interesting to read most of the time, but I rarely have the reflex to go on your blog/website. I think that could also give you more "exposure"

I used to do that, but I've been blogging for... 14, maybe 15 years now, and if people don't know where I am, it's because they aren't interested, which is ok. Plus, I haven't exactly been on SW's good side for a long time, although you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who has supported the product as much as I have. Besides my books and other stuff, I'm all over the web as it is. Not sure how much more "exposed" it's legal to be. :D

Excellent blog post @matt. Truth in everything you write. Those were good times pre-2010 and DS taking a more active role in SolidWorks.

The DS vision is as whacked as their asinine marketing bit on towing the iceberg to Africa.

Fortunately for all of us, SolidWorks is such a huge part of the revenue and profits for DS. We may not get huge improvements in SolidWorks but it will be harder to kill off the desktop version of it.

As DS is finding out the hard way that most no one is much interested in Catia V6 in any incarnation. This includes big enterprise CAD environments that use Catia.

Yeah, I'm still waiting to hear from anyone that is really using 3dxworks on any kind of serious project or scale. As far as I can tell they just have a few half baked products with more in the works. But at this rate I expect we can see it meet feature parity with Desktopworks in 15 years minumum.
