BOM sort (sort on insert)

I've created a custom BOM which (on insert) sorts automatically by assembly build order.
I know I can manually sort after the fact but can I get my custom BOM to sort alphabetically by part number(header) on insert?

After doing the desired sort, save the BOM template. And then next time it should sort on sort, you can right click on the BOM and select sort > apply sort (check reply by @JSculley below)

I don't think you can. You can save the sort settings to the template, but you must manually apply the saved settings in new documents that use the template. See:

Yes that is correct once I rechecked. But it wa working for me earlier and hence I did not add the extra step.

The API person inside me is thinking of a macro using which you insert the BOM and it get sorted as needed.
