Silicon, USA: Technology Made in America

Ever tried to buy a computer made entirely of US parts and assembled here? You can't. But here are 46 companies making high-quality tech products in the United States.

“Designed by Apple in California.” The tag is in every iPhone box, asserting the primacy of thousands of minds in Cupertino feverishly inventing the latest technology. But once they come up with the plans for an AirTag or an iMac, those get shipped overseas. It’s been decades since Silicon Valley, the heart of American computing, made many of its own devices.

A recent Reuters-Ipsos survey shows that Americans want to buy more US-made products, as long as they don’t have to pay more for them. The poll found that 69% of people said an item being US-made was at least somewhat important, but that 63% wouldn’t be willing to pay more than a 10% premium for something to be American-made.

Manufacturing jobs tend to be good jobs; at least, they're better than just selling imported products. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, "assemblers and fabricators" earn an average of $37,550 per year, while "retail sales workers" make $29,010.

"Our nation is falling behind its biggest competitors on research and development (R&D), manufacturing, and training. It has never been more important for us to invest in strengthening our infrastructure and competitiveness, and in creating the good-paying, union jobs of the future," the Biden administration stated in a recent executive order...

I worked in Silicon Valley in the 90s, and you could drive a couple of miles and hit all the big players. We had our silicon wafers/chips made right in town. It was an incredible time to be there.

Are the chemicals involved in making micro chips even allowed into the state of California? Yeah, I'm picking on CA there, but my point is there's this "don't want "those dirty manufacturing plants" here in our green country" mentality that is mislead by pictures of stacks puking smoke and sludge oozing into the river with a factory in the back ground. We have A LOT of environmental requirements that all the manufacturing in the states must meet. Meeting most of the requirements costs a lot of money. Now allow in products from other countries (on the same planet as ours by the way) that do not need to meet those requirements and add in looseness of labor laws and there is no fair market. Many domestic companies adopted and found a service or quality value that they can provide that makes the price worth paying for some customers.

The portion of the EO that you quoted is good and accurate from what I can see. Agriculture, mining and manufacture generate wealth; sales and services just move it around. While the latter are important to a health economy and society the former are critical, with out them our economy is just coasting.

Consumers here are blissfully ignorant about the stuff we haul home in our 10,000 lb SUVs; we like it that way and don't want it changed, we just want to make is sound like we want a change. It's obvious all around, we want "Made in USA" but we don't want tariffs on imports that would level the playing field. We want manufacturing jobs but we don't want factories. We want cheap energy but we don't want mining or drilling. We don't want windmills chopping birds, we don't want hydro dams chopping fish, we don't want coal plants, we don't want nuclear plants yet we cannot function without central air.
