WHY can't I delete BOM rows?!

I often need to delete specific rows in BOMs because I need separate BOMs for sheet metal, structural components, and purchased parts. I used to be able to delete rows and the item numbers would all update. Now when I click delete, the numbers don't update and the rows can be brought back with "Show Row/Column". It's just as if I hid them instead of deleting them.
Note: I am using 2021 SP1.

Hrm, looks like someone mixed up his command programmation
Leave it to SolidWorks to manage this.

Now that I think of it, are you working with a BOM or a weldment table? Weldment tables can't have rows deleted I think(not 100% sure and I didn't validate)
Has it worked before and stopped working? If so, look inside your hidden messages, maybe there's one that prompts you about hiding it rather then deleting it?

Yes, it is a BOM. Weldment cutlists don't work for assemblies.
I really wish for the level of control that Solid Edge offers. Here's a screenshot of the BOM properties in SE. My jaw literally dropped when I saw this the first time. Note all the tabs at the top, too!

I just tested it on 2019 SP5 and I get the same behavior as you do, retarded if you ask me.

It works if you use an Indented "Flat Numbering" BOM.
It's stupid... but what else do you expect from SW....

The only thing I can think to suggest is that using the split bom feature. It doesn't really solve your issue of having each table start at 1, however it should allow you to keep things in sequential order.
Select a row, right-click and select Split -> Horizontally Above/Below the row you've selected.
