At a minimum, at least I'm not in this boat alone. I was also on 2020 SP5 for a few years and agree it balanced both aspects well with EG turned off.
Maybe this will be a big benefit to others as more feedback comes in.

Btw - trying another option like 'annotation views' and checking "current" does not change the result. I haven't been able to get the lines to populate under any circumstance thus far.

I suppose it is possible that they were able to "fix" it without the use of the search button that collected all of the virtual component references, but that seems unlikely. I suppose I won't know until I try it at some point in the future. SP5 perhaps.

Seems like the consensus based on the small sample size here is that I'll probably run into a few instances where it could have been helpful, but I won't notice 99% of the time. Hopefully the instances that make it a necessity in the first place get fixed in future versions... we will see.
